According to /etc/security/limits.conf, nproc controls the “max number of processes”.
In reality, it counts a thread started by a process as a process.
This makes the setting orders of magnitude less useful. And, since it goes through pam, and thus gets decided at start time, also a little painful to recover from changing this setting to a higher value to account for threads.

As short summary of what has been going on at Imendio lately.
- A few weeks ago a couple of Imendians met up in Hamburg and stayed at Tim's apartment over the weekend. We had some very interesting discussions about canvases, GTK+ tasks that can be lifted of the core maintainers and bling effects for GTK+. Micro Müller was there and showed some of the nifty features he was working on and Benjamin Otte gave a short presentation of how Flash works. And of course, Reperbahn, weird back street pub, Pudel Club and finally the Fish Market until 11.30 the following day.
- Tim has been working on improving the maintenance situation in the GTK+ project and as a result he sent out an email about ways for people to help out and getting involved. If you are interested in participating in the continued success of the project, read the email and see if there is anything you can do.
- Carlos sent out an email to get the discussion going on finding a canvas/new widget core for GTK+. I'm thrilled to see some movement in this area again and very much look forward to having this functionality in GTK+.
- We decided to sponsor Guadec for the third year in a row. Let's make this one even better than the last!
- Last but definitely not least, GMAE was announced yesterday. Kudos to all involved and in particular Jeff for making this possible. This is an important step to spread GNOME (all of it, including the community) to the embedded/mobile market.

What is new with this version (Ubuntu 7.04 tour)?
- The installer has now a Windows migration tool
- GNOME 2.18.1 is available on the desktop and it's a pretty good milestone, congrats to the whole GNOME community for the awesome work
- Network-manager is now part of the default installation
- Compiz is available on the CD, you just have to use the desktop effects menu item to try it
- Easy installation of multimedia codecs
- Easier install of proprietary drivers
- The new bug reporting tool apport makes trivial to retrace crash files to get debug backtraces. The bugsquad is doing a rocking work there but there is still lot of detailed bugs which could be useful upstream. If you are upstream you are welcome to subscribe to the package corresponding to your software on launchpad or have a look on bugs there. If you don't want to get distributions bug you can subscribe to the upstream product and you should get mail only when an upstream task is opened
- And many other changes

I am a big fan of the bash completion feature but i recently discovered it has a cost : my bash heap is 3536KiB.
This looks big because I often run more than 10 shells.
So i tried -norc --noprofile and heap was then 932KiB, more decent. Just for fun, I straced bash and discovered that it was sourcing twice /etc/bash_completion and as there is nothing to prevent it from being reloaded, it really loads and process twice the same completion files. I checked my /etc/bash.rc and ~/.bashrc and they were both . /etc/bash_completion.
I've fixed my ~/.bashrc and bash heap is now 2232KiB. x10 so it actually saves up to 10MiB of memory on my system: yahoo !

Its been an awesome week, its done justice to the last 6 months of blood tears and sweat that were poured into the great release that is Feisty Fawn.
A few things I wanted to mention, but first off, I should say Hi! My Ubuntu Membership was just approved, and I wanted to give a shout out and say hello to all those I haven’t met yet. Second, I wanted to do a little introduction, but given the general excitement, I figured I would link to my wiki and launchpad page, where most of you can get an idea of what I do, and where I can help. I’m always looking for new ways to get involved in the community, and if your working on something that you think I could help with, drop me an e-mail or find me on the IRC, and theres a good chance I’ll be all over it ;). That said I look forward to all the great releases down the road.
Just a few minutes ago I figured I would help the Ubuntu servers as best I could by seeding all the i386 iso’s, at the moment, there are close to 4000 seeds. I couldn’t ask the Ubuntu community for anything more, I downloaded the whole thing in close to 2 minutes, and am seeding now. Seeing as the bittorrent community needed no help, I decided that I would host the most popular iso on my site to help as best I can. (I thought about trying a full mirror, but this late, I figured it would do more harm then good, if I’m wrong, let me know!)
Here are the links, I know they aren’t for the main mirror site, but if you read my blog or one of the planet’s I’m on, and are thinking of grabbing the iso, consider using this link. If it doesn’t work, it means I could only be so generous, and I was going way over the 2TB limit this month, but I don’t think I’m that popular.

Use a common path for freeing all allocated variables so that
everything gets freed correctly even on case of errors.
* src/NetworkManagerAP.c (nm_ap_set_user_addresses): Free the old
user_addresses GList.
* src/NetworkManager.c (device_stop_and_free): Use nm_device_stop()
instead of nm_device_deactivate() to stop the device's worker thread
and remove all references to the device.
(nm_data_free): Process pending mainloop events after all devices are
shut down - The device stop produces the scheduling of multiple signals
which steal references to devices but never have a chance to run.

Reduce the number of times the Gnome applet wakes up, especially when
it's doing absolutely nothing and is hidden. Initial patch by

- (nma_dbus_filter): when NM isn't around, or when it goes away,
kill the redraw timeout. When NM starts up, start the redraw
timeout. Also, if we get kicked off the bus for some reason,
start the reconnection timeout if one's not already running.
- (nma_dbus_init): better handling of error conditions, don't leak
a half-initialized dbus connection
- (nma_dbus_connection_watcher): consolidate places we reinitialize
the applet's data, just call nm_dbus_init_helper()
- (nma_start_dbus_connection_watch): new function, starts a periodic
timeout that calls nma_dbus_connection_watcher()
- (nma_dbus_init_helper): if we get a successful connection, kill the
reconnection timeout, and don't start the reconnection timeout
unconditionally anymore

- Expose nma_start_dbus_connection_watch()

- (nma_update_state): no longer static, called from applet-dbus.c for
immediate UI updates on certain events
- (nma_set_running): new function; take over setting applet->running,

running (ie, NM is active), and only when we're running, start the
redraw timeout.
- (nma_destroy): kill the redraw timeout by setting 'not running', and
kill any reconnection timeout
- (nma_get_instance): move one-off dbus initialization code here since
nm_dbus_init_helper() gets called more than once, possibly by the
reconnection timeout function too. And, when we start up, if we
can't get a connection to the bus, start the reconnection timeout.
But don't start the redraw timeout yet, only do that when we get
NM's state and find out if it's running or not.
