it is the only verifiable method allowing completely trustworthy recounts.

See my followup post. Nutshell: paper methods are not at all trustworthy either, as any resident of Florida, Mexico, or Chicago, just to name a few high-profile places, will tell you.

Reconsider your arguments, please. Voting computers are bad idea alltogether. Even if you try to program a solution as free software/open source, you can never trust a computer to actually run that particular software. Open source doesn't help. It only helps those with access and interest in manipulation getting their stuff sold.

Nothing is generally broken with the paper-based voting process. While there are some issues with possible fraud on a very local scale, it is the only verifiable method allowing completely trustworthy recounts.

A recount with a voting computer is not possible. Voting computers should be banned. Open source doesn't help. If Red Hat is going into these areas, they will quickly become an enemy of democratic activist groups worldwide.

hbons: pretty sure they are closed source everywhere. If RH were to enter this market, and press the security and democratic advantages of open source, they would be able to advance quickly in it, I believe.

I don't buy that Linux, as software, is particularly revolutionary. The method of production is revolutionary, yes, but that's distinct from the revolutionarity of the software, or (in this case) the revolutionarity of the companies based on the software. If RH does this, they should do it because it makes good business sense to use this development method, not because they should be throwing off the chains of our oppressors.

I fully agree with you Luis. Software is about doing our jobs and revolutionary software (as Linux is portrayed) should revolutionize our lives. Voting is one of these things that there is a "door open" yet in the market and the biggest Linux company should pursue it.
